Keeping Our River Mighty

Mighty River Waikato brand

Exhibition On Now at the Waikato Museum

This exhibition explores the amazing world of the Waikato River. Discover the stories our river holds, and how people in our community are restoring the health of our great natural resource.

Listed below are some of our River Crusaders...find out how you can help too!

Kowhai

Waikato Rivercare Project
Their mission is to plant and maintain the native plant habitat along the river bank. That is an enormous undertaking – 240km of river bank that needs their attention! Already their hard work shows signs of restoring and enhancing the biodiversity along the river bank.

Giant Kokopu

Mangakotukutuku Stream Care Group
The Mangakotukutuku Stream flows through Hamilton, and enters the Waikato River.  It is home to a wide variety of stream life, that this group are working to protect.  They are also improving the parts of the steam that currently need help.  You can help too!

Tui 2000
This project encourages tui back into Hamilton.  The Waikato River is the corridor for these delightful birds to come back into the city.  Through tree planting, tui are encouraged into the city, which makes it a more pleasant place to live, as well as helps sustain the environment for future generations.

Kowhai Planting

Kowhai Festival Community Planting
Hamilton City Council is working with community groups and residents to improve our environment by planting more native trees and shrubs. We already have thousands of trees and shrubs planted by community groups in our city's parks. The intention of the "Kowhai Festival" planting is to revegetate the river margins with Kowhai throughout the city (where possible) to recreate the yellow glow that once characterised the river in spring when the Kowhai flower.

Clean Streams Project
Reducing the impacts of farming on waterways.

Landcare Groups
Local communities taking action to address environmental issues in their area

Shore Futures
Integrated catchment planning project for the Kawhia and Aotea catchments

Smart Water Use campaign

Fish on Drains campaign

Enviroschools in Hamilton

Project Halo
Bringing native birds back into Hamilton City

Healthy Ecosystems: Birds in the bush, Fish in the Streams
A project that aims to educate the general public about aquatic habitat restoration and raise its profile within the community.

Valuing Water
A project that looks at how is water being utilised? What regimes have been put to the test? What is working? What is not? Why? These are the questions which will form the basis of a scoping investigation which examines how New Zealand's territorial authorities are managing our water assets.

Hamilton's Environmental Sustainability Strategy
The Environmental Sustainability Strategy aims to spell out the changes we need to make to create a sustainable Hamilton.

Hamilton's Creativity and Identity Strategy
A theme area in this Hamilton City Council strategy is called 'Re-connecting to the Waikato River' which talks about the river reflecting the city, and the city therefore needing to reflect the river.
