Three Buildings and a Squirrel Drama, a multimedia installation by Nicky Deeley29 April - 15 October 2006

Three Buildings and a Squirrel Drama was one of my earliest forays into working with a section of an imagined narrative. Characters, setting, props, and interaction/action, are all the neccesary elements needed to imply a detailed story unseen. I am constantly striving to achieve the perfect balance of joy and pathos, the mundane and the ethereal.

Nicky Deeley

Nicky Deeley (b.1978) grew up in Te Awamutu and studied painting and sculpture at Wintec, School of Media Arts in Hamilton, graduating in 1999. She currently resides in London where she works as a set designer for a London based theatre company and was recently commissioned to design the cover for The Datsuns new album Smoke and Mirrors.

Nicky DeeleyShe works with mixed media, constructing narratives through collected objects and wall paintings. She often works under pseudonyms, lending to the playfully fabricated feeling of her work, in line with her interests in folklore and fairytales. Her work is created through various methods of collecting, she sketches and photographs moments that she witnesses and gathers objects which hold some resonance to her; translating these collections into exhibitions, reworking the found objects and observed moments into sculptures and paintings with interwoven narratives. Deeley looks at the investment of emotion that is put into certain objects, how these objects can engage her audience and invoke memories and feelings.
