The Visual Arts Collection has around 3,000 artworks, including a range of media including paintings, sculpture, photography, ceramics, print making and drawings.

This collection has works created since the early colonial times, to the present day with a strong regional / iwi focus. Among the artists represented are Mary McIntyre, Margot Philips, Fred Graham and Buck Nin alongside Gottfried Lindauer and C F Goldie. 

 Key examples of more recent distinguished artists who have helped shape art in this country include Colin McCahon, Ralph Hotere, Sir Toss Woollaston, Bill Sutton, Gretchen Albrecht, Et. Al., Tony Fomison, Philip Clairmont, Peter Robinson, and the late great Don Driver.
