Our Collections
Waikato Museum is a regional museum and our collections reflect different aspects of our culture, identity and history. Our museum is renowned as a major repository of taonga (treasures) for the Tainui people of the region. Many of these taonga are important to the history of New Zealand. On permanent display is the magnificent war canoe, Te Winika as well as contemporary Tainui carvings and woven wall panels.
We have over 60,000 taonga/objects in our collections of Visual Arts, Social History, Tangata Whenua and Science. The collections contain important taonga from Maori history to the early years of European settlement to today, including our regional art and history, (missionaries, Maori agriculture of the 1850s, Kingitanga, Waikato campaigns, dairy industry, timber industry, coal-mining, river usage) and New Zealand national events which impact upon the region.
Our staff is dedicated to preserving and displaying our cultural heritage and to introduce to visitors our precious legacy. By developing the collections on your behalf, we ensure that they continue to be relevant for future generations.
